Detailed Review

Even though the Compact series have obviously changed over the years, the screen is still fixed at 720p till today. However, the bezel size needs to be cut-down we think.  Anyhow, the real problem is, if the XZ1 Compact can sell the super-mini notion, when borderless displays and beautiful compact five-inches are ruling the market. Let’s find out!

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Bundle

You will get the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact in a mid-size paper case with the phone inside, a systematic 1.5A@5V charger plug besides a USB Type-CWire. Phone measures around 129 x 64 x 9.3 mm and weighs around 140g in total. It has a 4.6″ screen, which makes it look pocket-friendly too. You will also notice that Sony has managed to keep the profile practically thin, with 9.3mm, which is again good.

Design Of Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact

Sony has a refined the design for you, but the signature “twisted” shape is still there. You do get the water-proofing with this model. XZ1 Compact is prepared of glass fiber and steel-clad plastic. This specific plastic is super strong, and scratch-resistant too. There are no antenna lines in this model. In fact, you get a much neater and even textured. However, the top and bottom parts of the Compact are finished with metal. Then come the screen bezels as usual. You also get the playful Horizon Blue and Twilight Pink changes in color, which is awesome. And, a more intense, smart look for Snow Silver and Black color of the series.

Device Impression

The Gorilla Glass 5 piece covers the front. Directly above the 4.6″ screen is the super-extensive 8MP selfie camera, the earphone that also pairs as a jiffy speaker, and a pair of sensors too. You will also notice a miniature notification LED nearby. Right, beneath the display is the second speaker following a petite spread grate.

Precisely on the left are the SIM and microSD card covers. Lugging the cap out will snap the microSD card, none the less for the Nano SIM you’ll have to try a sharp object. The volume knob, plus the camera shutter are also on the left side. Near to them is the power/lock key, which stand-ins as a fingerprint scanner too.

Display Impact

You get a 4.6-inch IPS LCD with this phone. It comes with a 720p, and results in a pixel solidity of 319ppi.

The panel comes with a swipe of Sony’s branded screen technology, as well as TRILUMINOS, X-Reality, and Dynamic Contrast Enhancement too. You don’t get to see HDR support, however.

A crowd of Sony’s branded display tools work on the Tri-luminous. Which is Sony’s symbol for what is usually recognized as a Quantum dot display, a deviation of LCD panels that bring a wider color range. It produces colors in a changed way than plain LCD’s too.

With software, you get three different color range and contrast choices. You can pick among any of the below, and also get a side-by-side contrast:

  • Standard mode
  • Professional sRGB
  • Super-vivid mode

There is a White balance option in the list of options to easily adjust color choices. You also get the X-reality for Mobile apparatus, which only mechanisms on videos and makes them sharper by refining precision.

Battery Life

The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is power-driven by the similar 2,700 mAh. The Snapdragon 835 chip is also included. There is also the paraphernalia of Oreo software optimizations, which looks to help the battery functioning in standby mode.

The phone gave an excellent 108-hour working rating in our usual battery tests. The phone scored some great browser and video playback marks, and its small display certainly aided here. The call trial and standby stamina rotated out similarly grand, as well.

The Sony XZ1 Compact ropes QuickCharge 3.0, however does not transport with a QC-compatible charger to all the countries, its region specific as of now.

The Android Oreo with Xperia Coating

You get the up-to-date Android 8.0 Oreo OS, with the same UI.  However, the Xperia ROM is light on the chipset, without additional features. You also get the Android-native Smart Lock, with conditional security, like:

  • Trusted devices
  • Locations
  • Faces
  • Voices

You also see the old-style app drawer, with a number of branded apps pre-installed in it. Then there are some great Oreo goodies included in the XZ1 Compact too. However, these are hidden quite deep, so you will need to browse deeply.

Paid and Free themes are available as usual, while the notification zone is pure Android. Periodic cleaning of cache is done by the Smart cleaner feature. With the Android Oreo’s new picture in picture mode, you can watch a video in a moving window while still organizing other tasks on your handset.

Performance Evaluation

You get a Snapdragon 835, inclusive of a 4GB RAM too. However, with Oreo ROM there are a few software optimization issues too. But, we are sure that both, Sony and the standard developers will speed-up things with the up-to-date Android system. The phone innings in super-cool numbers, under top performance tests. It is capable of managing everything and offers astonishingly even Android procedures. Indeed, the Xperia XZ1 Compact is possibly the fastest phone at present.

Notable Apps

The other features are same like all mobiles present. But, we want to highlight some noteworthy apps here, like:

  • The News app
  • Xperia lounge
  • Lifelog

Sony did include all the third-part apps too, along Google app. But, yes, with this model you do get a simple file manager in its ROM, which is awesome.

Sony’s Photo Album

There is an Album app, that levers image programing on the Xperia XZ1 Compact. This is among the record all-inclusive and feature-rich gallery apps till date. All of your Photos are prearranged by month, and you can enjoy the pinch-zoom to alter the size of thumbnails too.

Similarly, you can browse photos on a map or by a photo-folder. There is the network storage too, so that you can view photographs from a DLNA server too. You can also use integration with online albums, like:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Flickr
  • Google Photos

The New 3D Creator

This is the debut of this feature on the Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact. This isn’t a camera mode, but slightly a distinct application called 3D Creator. Though, yes the advanced feature set is likely reliant onthe Motion Eye camera and hardware. It does the three-dimensional capture of things along with scanning a face, head, and food, along with freeform mode too.

The Music App

Sony’s routine player comes pre-installed on the Xperia XZ1 Compact. The background side menu proposes similar browsing options. But, yes, there’s no FM radio on the Xperia XZ1 Compact, along with Sony’s branded song recognition app Track ID.

Video App

This app comes without the TV guide functionality, but you do get the Extensive subtitle customization support. It has the ability to connect to attuned storage devices and stream media altogether. However, there is no pop-out interface here too. We hope that Sony could device the Android Oreo picture in picture API in near future though. What do you say?

The 19MP Motion Eye Camera

The XZ1 Compact has an excellent 19MP, IMX400 ExmorRS, which is also called the Motion Eye camera. There’s no OIS moreover, the camera depend on EIS for performance. You can do the 960fps slow-motion video with this tool! Sony has given you a slightly lower resolution for the IMX400, but with same corporeal dimensions of the sensor. The aperture isstill the same-old f/2.0, but with ample 1/2.3″ sensor.

Sony’s engineers did extra work with this super-mini model. And we do appreciate them for their hard work. You get a cutting-edge Snapdragon 835 chipset, along with the Adreno 540 GPU. But, yes bad screen resolution. It has a small screen with some decent 319ppi included. The moniker Motion Eye camera is here as before, but, with better-qualityin low-light aptitudes, too. And that 960fps slow-mo video apprehension is a luxury. The phone is Waterproof, sophisticated, and on edge with the best single-camera systems. Over-all, we are quite happy with this new flagship of Sony, and hope to see more enhancements in future devices.
